wanna go to District 12?

The Hunger Games is all the rage these days. I’ll be the first to admit, I’m a huge fan. I read the books in, like, a week and saw the movie on opening night. Go Katniss and Peeta! Go District 12!

At first glance, the premise of these books may seem weird and barbaric, however, I think one of the reasons they’re so popular is because {spoiler alert} the underdog wins. Katniss inspires the people of District 12 to have hope. And District 12 is in desperate need of some hope.

District 12 was most likely located in what we call Appalachia {West Virginia}. Similar to life in Appalachia today, District 12 was rampant with poverty and the living conditions were less than ideal. Hunger was a constant companion and coal miners worked long hours underground to the point of exhaustion.

The need for hope in Appalachia is as vital right now as it was in the movie. And you can be a part of brining them that hope!

Beginning in 2009 Hope Force International chose to focus time and resources on the chronic poverty in McDowell County, West Virginia. The main goal is to inspire hope through practical acts of love and tangible assistance. With the help of Hope Force Reservists and other volunteers Hope Force plans to offer assistance to families to create dry and safe dwellings. Their desire is to offer aid that doesn’t inadvertently promote a spirit of dependency and poverty.

Hope Force works to assist and empower the people of West Virginia, as opposed to just “doing it all” for them.

Families will be asked to have able family members work alongside Hope Force volunteers, giving them a sense of ownership in the project.

Through word and deed, Hope Force seeks to be a “ministry of presence” and action to those who face these suffocating needs.

So, if you want to go to District 12 {Appalachia} and help, then click here for more information. Together, we can help bring hope to these precious people and give them something to smile about once again.

So as you consider if you want to help, may the odds be ever in your favor. {I couldn’t resist}
